Guide to Staying Alive While High Sec Mining
In this guide I will say some things that you can consider while mining in high sec to try and stay alive. We all know ice belts and ore belts are different in size shape warp in point and things in them. So for this guide I will start with ore mining.
One thing not to do while ore mining is to go afk for long periods of time this is one great way to get yourself killed if you are in anything that is untanked. After some time sitting in an unprotected frig up to even exhumers with rats shooting at you, you will die. There are some ways to protect yourself from the vicious rats. One way is to have your drones out while you afk mine so that at the first sign of getting shot your drones will leap into action and fight the rats in dramatic fighting styles. A downside to using this method is that the rats could attack your drones and they might not go after the rats so you will eventually lose all your drones then die. A second way to live is actually putting items on your ship to live. I know it sounds surprising “mining barges with defenses?” but they can be tanked enough to with stand the brutal beating from high sec rats.
Some of these modules are things like a shield recharger with the other medium slots filled with shield extenders. That combination increases the passive hp regen of your vessel. If you are running low on CPU and Power grid you could fill the medium slots up with civilian shield booster. You could also add modules that add resistances to your ships so that with each shot from a rat you take less damage. If you go to market/ship equipment/shield/shield resistance amplifiers you will see a list of those modules there.
A second way to not get your fancy mining ship blown up is to not jet can mine. There are safer ways to go about expanding your cargo hold. One way to do this is to add cargo hold optimization rigs or by adding expanded cargo holds to your low slots. But if you have these maxed out and you are still desperate for more room you can always go out and purchase anchor able containers. There are a couple types of secure containers but the only ones that would be somewhat useful would be Giant secure container and Huge secure container. These may protect your ores but if you are doing and big type of mining they will not be useful after a short amount of time (mining barges and exhumers). My suggestion is just fitting cargo hold expanders on the low slots.
If you are jet can mining and someone comes and steals from you can(s) DO NOT attack them. The person that is there might look to be in a puny little frig that you can kill but they are trained and fitted to take out your ship. In the end if you do attack them and they do kill you they will gain more than by just taking your cans.
Now to talk about how to stay alive in ice belts. Unlike ore belts which are in semi circles ice belts are in a long band spanning 200km to 250km. My suggestion is to warp in at between 50km and 70km from the generic warp in point. This is because if you are at the generic warp point a ganker can easily warp in and suicide gank you. If you are ice mining and see that each unit takes up 1000m3 of space do not think you are safe to jet can mine. Even though frigs cannot take the 1000m3 into their cargo hold they can put it into another jet can and like I said in the ore mining part they are there to kill you. Rats are still a threat in ice belts but because of the size of belts and the number of people that are there, it is less likely for you to get attacked by them but it is still a possibility so you should fit some defenses to your mining ship.
